This is the piece that an artist like me dreams of when fumbling towards the materialization of a creative assertion- one that feels intuitive and urgent but is, at the time, still amorphous in the conscious mind. Brava.

“Elena is trying to design for the patriotic woman of a nation on the verge of collapse.”

Not seeing an imminent collapse of the nation. I’m seeing a regime on the verge of collapse. But the USA has been through several of these cycles already. We’ve had three founding eras. The revolution and early Republic, then the Civil War and reconstruction and the industrialization of the country, then the new deal, and the Second World War and early Cold War. That third one was a great moment, but those institutions are now worn out, they no longer have any vitality or hopeful energy, they have decayed into rackets. The time has come to sweep them away and make new ones. I expect exciting times in the arts, fashion, architecture, music, science, technology, a positive politics of reconstruction and rebuilding.

Be cheerful, we are heading into a new founding era. And it’s going to be great.

You’re right— I should have been more precise. The current cycle is coming to a close/ the status quo of the last 20 -30 years is collapsing!

I appreciate your analysis here, especially as someone who knows about as much about fashion as about the Arabic language (and possibly more about Arabic).
